Dem Misdirection on Voter ID, and Why No One is Shocked

Recently, Governor McDonnell signed a law that requires voters to be able to provide a photo ID in order to cast a ballot. Before the ink was even dry on the bill, cries of "voter suppression" were rising on the left. Shocker, I know. ABC 7 news published this article yesterday, and while the title is true, there are several shocking examples of misinformation.

The article claims that Virginia's original voter ID bill, which was enacted to respond to several instances of voter fraud in the Commonwealth, was enacted to "prevent President Barack Obama from winning Virginia for the second presidential election in a row"....or it could have been the many documented cases of voter fraud here (predominantly on the left), culminating with the investigation of Patrick Moran for soliciting voter fraud just last year on the campaign of his father, Congressman Jim Moran.

Dems are attacking straw men and hiding behind feeble allegations that the elderly, and the low-income urban populations won't be able to vote under the law. The question is why not? The tired old allegations that are rising over the law have all been covered before.

At this point, no one can be expected to believe that a law that: 1)  can be satisfied by one of the most common documents in America, a driver's license, 2) provides a FREE photo ID to anyone that needs one and applies for it, and 3) carries a mandate for the State Board of Elections to educate the public about it, is the deadly sword of tyrrany falling against the cringing masses of Virginia's voters.

The common-sense answer is that there is nothing standing in the way of a registered voter having their voice heard. This legislation just seeks to stamp out the kind of underhanded tactics that some people (Wendy Rosen) use to win elections. At the end of the day, no one is surprised that the organized left is fighting this measure that ensures the integrity of our elections. They stand to lose the most by having fraud stamped out.

The Impact of the 'Fiscal Cliff': How Will Virginia Land?

Even as employers in Utah and Nevada are laying off employees in the wake of the election and its implications, here in Virginia we too are sitting under the gun of the 'Fiscal Cliff'. With a pro-business economic climate, a huge stake in the Defense Department, and a large rural population, the Commonwealth stands to lose in a big way if these crippling cuts are allowed to take effect.

The specific impact to Virginia? Well, if legislators allow it to pass, the numbers associated with the 'Fiscal Cliff' are staggering. Virginia alone could lose up to 270,000 jobs; a report from George Mason University predicts 207,000. The Defense Department would be cut by $110 Billion in total, payroll taxes would increase 2%, the list goes on and on.

Why Us? One third of Virginia's economy depends on federal spending, 20% on Defense spending. Northern Virginia is inextricably tied to federal contracting. Fairfax County is home to more federal contractors than any county in the nation, and 75% of all of Virginia's jobs that depend on federal spending are Northern Virginian. Fairfax itself is bracing to lose roughly 80,000 jobs.

Virginia is also hugely important to the military. Quantico, Langley, the Pentagon, Fort A.P. Hill and Norfolk Naval Base all lie within our borders. The active duty populations of those bases alone is roughly 128,000, and there are 22 more military bases in Virginia as well. Add the families supported by these installations, and the sweeping effects of these spending cuts and it is clear that Virginia military families would be devastated. Our veteran population is over 822,000, one of the highest in the nation.

So what are we doing about it? Governor McDonnell, and the General Assembly have been aware of this threat, and taken steps to soften the blow that Virginians could feel. Gov. McDonnell is working with state agencies to make an overall 4% cut to help weather the storm. Thanks to the Governor's policies of responsible spending and a healthy business community we have posted a surplus in each of the last 3 years, the most recent of which amounts to nearly $450 million. We have a $30 Million Federal Action Contingency Trust (FACT) to help bridge the budget divides that would emerge in the case that the cuts take effect.

While those efforts are admirable, and while Virginia is a healthy business state braced for the blow, the hit is still going to be significant. Our Governor and legislature have done what they can to help Virginians prepare. These tax hikes and spending cuts combined are looming over us, and they threaten the livelihood and the quality of life of hundreds of thousands of our friends, our families, and of our fellow Virginians.

Governor Bob McDonnell Galvanizes the RNC

Governor McDonnell's superb speech yesterday at the RNC brought with it a refreshingly positive message of hope. The Governor took a prime time spot in the succession last night of Republican governors and luminaries. His speech was one predicting a change away from the nanny-state entitlement society and into an "Opportunity society".

He kept powerful control of the numbers, reminding listeners that 7 of the 10 states with the lowest unemployment are led by Republicans as well as 12 of the 15 best states for business.

McDonnell serves as the chair of the Republican Governors' Association.  He challenged his audience to imagine "...what we could do if we had a president who would support us, not obstruct us."

Virginia has not been a fortunate state as far as the Obama campaign goes, and the Governor was not afraid to say so. He noted the famous Biden "chains" gaffe in Danville, as well as the fact that our Vice President seemed to think that he was in North Carolina that day. The speech also highlighted President Obama's infamous "You didn't build that" comment; which occurred in Roanoke.

Stitching references of his own life into it, Gov. McDonnell connected with Americans in his speech. He spoke of his own grandparents' journey to America from Ireland, and his daughter's service in the Military. At the conclusion of his speech, he deferred to a small business owner from Virginia to testify to the truth behind his statements. Truly, an inspiring speech.

Read the Richmond Times-Dispatch article on his speech here.
